This Month (December) in 1954…

On December 2nd, the United States Senate voted to condemn Joseph McCarthy for conduct that brings the Senate into dishonor and disrepute.

In happier news, two days later, a new burger joint opened: Burger King!

As an early Christmas present, Laos attained independence from France on Christmas Eve.

In film news, this month saw four big releases:

Young at Heart, directed by Gordon Douglas. This remake stars Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, and many others. This one is a complex love flick; see it with your best girl!

Speaking of love, we also got the American release of Romeo and Juliet, starring Laurence Harvey and Susan Shentall. Renato Castellani directs this adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play!

The Bridges at Toko-Ri, directed by Mark Robson, stars William Holden, Mickey Rooney, and Grace Kelly. This one is about a troubled US Navy pilot in Korea, and all the dealings in the war.

Finally, there was The Black Pirates, starring Anthony Dexter and Martha Roth. It also stars Robert Clarke, Lon Chaney Jr, and Toni Gerry. This adventure follows a band of pirates searching for a hidden treasure in central America.
