It’s hard for me to find beers I really enjoy, because I have what is apparently a bizarre set of tastes in beer. At least regionally. (Or maybe it is very popular and that’s why my beers of choice aren’t available.)
Because of this I am willing to try almost anything labelled as a stout, or with the word “cream” in it. This comes from the fact Sam Adams Cream Stout is about the only regularly available beer of this particular taste. I dig other types, too, but this is my favorite style: the dark, almost burned chocolate flavor.
So, a while ago, I’m in a local supermarket cruising around the beer section looking for the kind of beer I like when I see something new: Tallgrass Buffalo Sweat, which claims to be an “Oatmeal Cream Stout.” That sounds interesting enough. I pick up the four pack and head home, dutifully putting them in the refrigerator.
Once cold enough, I try it — Wow!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: My favorite beer ever was a microbrew off the tap in Gatlinburg, TN. This is possibly my favorite beer out of a can, ever. It’s got everything I’m looking for. It’s creamy, it’s got that deep flavor. It tastes much better than what I imagine buffalo sweat would.
Seriously, it’s a complex beer — a bit of sweet with that roasted flavor I crave. It’s one of the best stouts I’ve ever had, and I’ll be buying it as long as I can find it (the stuff I like seems to vanish from the shelves).
The cans are pint cans, which is damn near perfect. One of the cans is a good accompaniment to an evening. Two is great for taxes. Anything more and you’re drinking too much of a good thing at once.
This is a great tasting beer, from an interesting company. Check them out: Tallgrass Beer.
